5 Tips for Planning an Outdoor Party

Summer is in full swing and it’s time for Pimms, BBQs and water fights! But wait, we live in Britain. We have to contend with torrential showers at a minute’s notice. How on earth are you supposed to plan a garden party when the weather is so unreliable?!

Necessities for an outdoor party

Event Hire have a few tips to ensure you have the best outdoor party come rain or shine. Whether it’s setting up a party in your own back garden or planning a full-scale summer ball in a marquee, we have everything you need to make your event the best outdoor party yet.

1. Glam Up Your Gazebo

British weather is renowned for being unreliable. There could be showers in the morning, sun in the afternoon and snow by the evening. We’re not saying you need to provide guests with umbrellas, sun cream and a scarf to combat this, but there are a few things that will help.

A gazebo is always a good option to provide cover over buffet tables, BBQs or DJ desks. They’ll keep the rain off the perishables and provide shade if you got lucky and it’s a stunning day. However, gazebos aren’t always the chicest option for a stylish summer party.

Dress it up with bunting or festoon lighting, perhaps a couple of lanterns or even some potted plants around the base of the legs. There’s lots of ways to glam it up and impress your guests, and whoever is in charge of the BBQ will thank you if it begins to rain.

2. Get creative with your seating

If you’re planning to continue the party into the evening, people will need to rest their feet every now and then. Without emptying your entire living room into your back garden, you may find that you’ll run out of appropriate seating and next thing you know, Grandma is flying down the patio on your office chair.

Bean bags, hay bales and even some stylish inflatable furniture can all be fun options. But make sure you include something a little more sturdy and comfortable for any older guests. Event Hire have a wide range of furniture to hire, in case you’re wondering what you’d do with six beanbags and eight hay bales the next day! See our range of event furniture for more inspiration!

3. Give them something to do

You can’t have a garden party without some games! Plus, it’s a great ice breaker, especially if you’re introducing different friend groups or family to one another. Team games are always good as they’ll get more people involved.

Some are really easy to set up and can be made using a lot of things you’ll already have. Whether it’s bobbing for apples or a game of beer pong. There’s lots of options and ideas out there. Just bear in mind people will more than likely be drinking so don’t choose anything with too many rules!

If you’ve got the space, then get out the badminton net for competitive fun or set up a game of croquet for a more civilised gathering.

4. Fancy a drink?

If you’ve got a hefty list of guests you might feel the need to try and please everyone when it comes to what drinks you supply. Don’t. It will work out very expensive and you may be left with lots left over. Just let your guests know to bring their own booze or write ‘BYOB’ on the invite. That way they’ll all bring what they like and roughly as much as they’ll need for the party. Just be sure to provide lots of ice, cups, a few soft drinks and garnishes and something for yourself of course!

This also means you can get creative and fun with your drinks table or bar. Offer your guests a ‘Pimp your Prosecco’ station with fruity liqueurs, cordials and fruit garnishes to jazz up their own drinks. Not only is it a fun addition to the party people will love it and it’s so easy for you! Or why not fill that old wheelbarrow full of ice to chill drinks, a ‘Beer-barrow’ if you will. Plus, it means you get to keep some space in the fridge for all the food!

5. Enjoy yourself!

Seems obvious, right? But it’s easy to get pent up on the small details of the day. You have to stop worrying; your friends will come, there is more than enough potato salad, it will probably rain a little. But everyone’s coming together, the music is playing, kids laughing, prosecco popping and sausages sizzling. So get your glad rags on, take a big sip of your drink and have fun!
